USC linebacker Morgan Breslin will miss the rest of the regular season, interim head coach Ed Orgeron said Wednesday.
Breslin will undergo surgery to repair a hip injury that has sidelined the senior for the past three games. Orgeron said Breslin could potentially return for a bowl game.
At 6-foot-2 and 250 pounds, Breslin has been one of the most disruptive defenders in college football over the last two seasons as a 4-3 defensive end and 3-4 outside linebacker. In 19 career games with the Trojans since transferring in from Diablo Valley Junior College, Breslin has accumulated 27.5 tackles for loss including 18 sacks.
While there may be concerns over whether Breslin has the athleticism to be an outside linebacker in the NFL, his relentless play and quiet demeanor should impress evaluators as they review his credentials.
"In my 27 years of coaching, Morgan is absolutely one of my favorite players I've ever coached," said Orgeron, who as an assistant at Miami and USC has coached numerous standout defensive linemen and top draft picks, including Warren Sapp, Russell Maryland and Jurrell Casey.
