A senior season that began with much promise has ended with a whimper for North Carolina quarterback Bryn Renner, whose season is over because of a shoulder injury. He will have surgery Wednesday for a torn labrum.

Week 10: Top QB performances

Clemson's Tajh Boyd played barely more than one half against Virginia but put up monster numbers in the top QB performance in Week 10 of college football. **More ...**

Renner threw for 3,356 yards, 28 touchdowns and seven interceptions and completed 65.4 percent of his passes last season, his first in coach Larry Fedora's wide-open offense. Big things were expected this season, and NFL Media draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah had Renner as the No. 3 senior quarterback in the nation and the No. 27 overall player heading into the season.

But Renner never seemed comfortable this season and generally struggled. He finishes the season with 1,765 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. He missed a loss to Virginia Tech with an ankle injury and shared snaps, though not equally, with backup Marquise Williams in the past three games.

Renner suffered a shoulder injury late in the third quarter of Saturday's win over North Carolina State. The seriousness of the injury and how soon he can begin rehab could be the difference between being drafted or having to go the free-agent route next May.

He is 20th in ACC history and third in school history with 8,221 career passing yards, and he also had 64 TD passes, which is third-most in school history.
