Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiakannounced Thursday that Keenum will start against the Kansas City Chiefson Sunday while Matt Schaub sits out with an ankle injury.
Despite outplayingT.J. Yates in a preseason competition for the backup job, Keenum was relegated to third-stringer for the first six weeks of the season.
When Yates face-planted in relief of Schaub last week, Kubiak was forced to reconsider his pecking order.
The NCAA's all-time leader in passing yards, touchdowns and completions in the University of Houston's quarterback-friendly offense, Keenum went undrafted in 2012 due to questions about his size and arm strength.
More than just a hometown hero, Keenum was a major cog in a preseason offense that led the NFL in offensive yards average (444.2), passing yards (300.2), total yards per play (6.2) and first downs per game (25). He finished the preseason 43-of-63 passing (68.3 percent) for 482 yards (7.7 YPA) with three touchdowns and a 106.7 passer rating.
Keenum will get an opportunity to show that he can be what Yates was not -- a viable alternative to a struggling Schaub. The deck is stacked against him this week, facing the NFL's stiffest defense in one of the league's toughest venues.
