Antonio Cromartie to have MRI after practice injury

A rousing week for the New York Jets got a dose of potentially sobering news Thursday.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports that cornerback Antonio Cromartie suffered a knee injury at practice. He was slated to have an MRI after the non-contact injury, which is never a good sign. ESPN's Rich Cimini first reported the news.

Cromartie's play has been inconsistent this year, but he's one of the most valuable players on the team. Without Cromartie taking on the opposing team's best receiver each week, Rex Ryan can't be nearly as creative with his defense. The Jets face the winlessPittsburgh Steelers on Sunday in New Jersey.

UPDATE: Both the New York Daily News and ESPN reported early Friday that Cromartie's MRI showed he escaped serious injury.
