Christian Ponder suffered a rib injury in the Vikings' Week 3 loss to the Cleveland Browns, but he's reportedly been cleared to play. Matt Cassel took over the following week and led the team to a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Then there's the recently signed Josh Freeman, who was pushed off the plank last week by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
NFL Media's Michael Irvin believes the decision should be an easy one.
"If I'm coach (Leslie) Frazier ... I'm wasting (Freeman's) career behind this other junk." Irvin said Thursday on the "M&M Podcast." "I'm wasting this asset messing with this other stuff, and Josh Freeman gives me a weapon at quarterback."
Ponder reportedly is on a short leash, as Cassel led the Vikings to their only win of the season, combined with Freeman's arrival. But Frazier repeatedly has thrown his support behind his first-round pick from 2011.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that the Vikings signed Freeman to provide an alternative to Ponder, not as an insurance policy. So it stands to reason that the Vikings plan to give Freeman a shot sooner rather than later.
