Russell Okung put on Seattle Seahawks' short-term IR

The Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks entered the season as consensus Super Bowl favorites. They have looked fantastic through two weeks. But they are both now missing their franchise left tackles.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday that the Seahawks plan to place tackle Russell Okung on injured reserve, with a designation to return. Okung saw a foot specialist this week, according to Rapoport's source. Okung later officially was placed on the short-term IR list.

That's the bad news. The Seahawks hope to get Okung back this year, unlike the Broncos who lost Ryan Clady for the season. The Seahawks also are hoping Percy Harvin returns later in the season. Coach Pete Carroll said Friday that defensive end Chris Clemons and cornerback Brandon Browner will be ready to make their season debuts this week against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Carroll also said Paul McQuistan will replace Okung, which is a steep drop-off in talent. McQuistan will move from left guard, where James Carpenter will have to step up.

Seattle's passing game has been solid, yet unspectacular early in the season. The offensive line had trouble protecting Russell Wilson in Week 1 in Carolina. Considering the team's defense and running game, it wouldn't be surprising to see Carroll get more conservative on offense after this news.
