Ohio State WR Devin Smith again decimates California secondary

Devin Smith probably wishes he could play against California every week.

After undressing the Golden Bears' secondary last season at the Horseshoe, the Ohio State junior wide receiver continued the onslaught with three receptions for a career-best 149 yards and two touchdowns in a 52-34 laugher on Saturday in Berkeley.

Things we learned

From AJ McCarron praising an unsung hero for Alabama's win to Oregon's epic rout, here are the things we learned from the third weekend of college football play. **More ...**

In two games against Cal, Smith has eight grabs for 294 yards and four touchdowns.

Smith broke loose for a 90-yard score on the Buckeyes' second play from scrimmage, running right past inexperienced Cal safety Damariay Drew.

Smith added a 47-yard touchdown 1:40 later, and Ohio State was never again seriously challenged, finishing with 608 yards of total offense.

Braxton Miller was not available because of a knee injury, so backup quarterback Kenny Guiton ran the spread-option scheme to perfection (21-of-32 passing for 276 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions). Running back Jordan Hall added 168 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

With the Ohio State offense producing at a prolific rate minus its Heisman Trophy candidate in Miller, a return trip to the West Coast for the Rose Bowl or BCS championship game looks to be in the cards. Unfortunately for Smith, Cal probably won't be on the opposite sideline if the travel itinerary brings him back to California.
