Matt Simms in, Geno Smith out for N.Y. Jets this week

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan has learned a valuable lesson.

After taking over-the-top heat for risking Mark Sanchez in the fourth quarter of last week's 24-21 preseason victory over the New York Giants, Ryan plans to hold rookie quarterback Geno Smith out of Thursday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles. NFL.com's Kimberly Jones reported the news Wednesday.

With Rex Ryan losing his cool over a QB battle gone awry, Kimberly Jones says the Jets already seem to be coming apart. More ...

With Smith and Sanchez out, a club source told NFL.com's Albert Breer on Wednesday the Jets will start Matt Simms on Thursday.

The team signed Green Bay Packers castoff Graham Harrell to cover for Greg McElroy, who will miss the preseason finale after aggravating a knee injury in practice.

Per NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, the injury is minor and will keep McElroy sidelined only for this week.

Ryan's sudden shift in philosophy suggests the Jets aren't confident Sanchez's bruised throwing shoulder will be well enough to toss him back into the mix for the Week 1 starting job. The Jets might have no choice but to start Smith against Darrelle Revis and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
