Northwestern and Wisconsin joined the growing multitude of teams that will wear different uniforms at times this season, unveiling white and red helmets, respectively, Thursday.

Northwestern's normal helmet is purple with a white "N," but the Wildcats will wear white with a purple "N" in the Aug. 31 opener at California. Northwestern last wore white helmets from 1978-80.

Wisconsin usually sports a white helmet with a red "W." Against Tennessee Tech on Sept. 7, the Badgers will don a red helmet with a white "W." Coach Gary Andersen has hinted that it could be worn in other games, as well.

Wisconsin wore a red helmet last season as part of a one-game uniform re-design, against Nebraska. The Badgers also wore red helmets from 1967-69, with those bearing the "Bucky Badger" logo.
