Geno Smith sits out New York Jets' game vs. Jaguars

Mark Sanchez will have the New York Jets' first-team offense all to himself Saturday night.

The team announced that rookie quarterback Geno Smith won't play against the Jacksonville Jaguars after rolling his right ankle in last week's preseason debut against the Detroit Lions.

Smith returned to practice this week, only to have the ankle flare up following an ugly four-interception session Wednesday. Coach Rex Ryan acknowledged that Smith wasn't "close to 100 percent" before announcing that Sanchez and the starters would play the entire first half against the Jaguars.

The two quarterbacks have produced almost identical numbers in training camp, but if Sanchez shines against the Jaguars, the Jets would have a tough time handing Smith the start in Week 3. It's looking more and more like Sanchez's job to lose, especially if Geno can't get on the field.
