USC hybrid safety/linebacker Dion Bailey is day to day after suffering a hip injury in practice Wednesday, head coach Lane Kiffin said Thursday.
The 6-foot, 200-pound Bailey played linebacker for the Trojans the last two seasons, starting all but one game in that span. Bailey had 80 tackles, eight tackles for loss and a team-high four interceptions last year.
With USC switching to a new 5-2 defense under former Arizona Cardinals and California defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast, Bailey moved back to safety in the spring to provide some experience in a secondary that must replace T.J. McDonald and Nickell Robey.
USC has been racked by a series of minor injuries with 23 players unavailable for full contact drills Wednesday evening, SCPlaybook.com reported.
