If the NCAA needs a new president sometime in the near future, BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall has mastered the abrupt about-face.
Mendenhall announced Thursday that the Cougars would not have players' names on the back of jerseys this season, instead featuring the words "Spirit," "Honor" and "Tradition" to represent the program's core values.
However, players were less than enthused with the change, with the Salt Lake Tribune reporting that several players reacted negatively, but were unwilling to say so publicly. Mendenhall later backtracked on Twitter, announcing that the jerseys would only be worn for BYU's homecoming game against Georgia Tech in October.
The BYU jersey-switcheroo caps a week of college football fashion faux pas. The NCAA announced it would stop selling jerseys through ShopNCAASports.com after ESPN college basketball commentator Jay Bilas pointed out the results of searches for prominent current players through the website.
