Barnett, 32, will provide depth behind starters London Fletcher and Perry Riley. Top reserve Keenan Robinson is out for the season after tearing a pectoral muscle for the second consecutive season.

Although Barnett led the Buffalo Bills in tackles last season, he had received scant interest on the open market while rehabbing an undisclosed injury. He remains strong in run support but too often was exposed in coverage against tight ends and running backs last season. His skill set is best suited to a 3-4 defense such as the one the Redskins run under defensive coordinator Jim Haslett.
