John Abraham arguably was the most talented free agent left on the open market, but he's no longer looking for work.
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that the Arizona Cardinals have signed the edge rusher on the heels of his Wednesday visit with the team. Abraham signed a two-year contract with the Cardinals, according to a source who speaks with the player. The team confirmed the deal.
Abraham, 35, drew plenty of early interest after the Falcons released him in March following seven solid seasons in Atlanta. The New England Patriots, Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks brought in Abraham for visits, but he reportedly wanted more money than teams were interested in paying for an aging defender.
Abraham is an intriguing addition for Arizona's 3-4 scheme. He played for years in the Falcons' four-man front, but he will make the switch to outside linebacker with the Cardinals. Abraham's an upgrade over Sam Acho and Lorenzo Alexander, who won't be mistaken as pass-rushing threats.
The Cardinals quietly have compiled a talented roster on defense in recent seasons. Abraham isn't a long-term answer, but he's still capable of getting to the quarterback, and that's what Arizona needs against the versatile young passers of the NFC West.
