Sedrick Ellis retires as Chicago Bears open camp

Sedrick Ellis' disappointing NFL career just got a lot more disappointing. The No. 7 overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft didn't show up for Chicago Bears training camp Thursday, informing the team that he plans to retire.

Ellis signed with the Bears during the offseason after spending five seasons with the New Orleans Saints. He was set to receive more than $1 million in 2013, with half of it guaranteed. Now he likely will be forced to forfeit his signing bonus.

Ellis never quite made the impact that was expected out of him after excelling at USC. He was a big reason why the Saints' run defense struggled so much over the years.

These stories bubble up every year around this time. Training camp will test a player's love of football. Just thinking about going to camp was enough for Ellis to hang 'em up at the age of 28.
