Bjoern Werner, the Indianapolis Colts' surprise first-round draft pick, agreed to terms in time for training camp.
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Werner's four-year contract is worth $7,896,398, with $6,414,617 guaranteed. The deal has offset language, and Werner is entitled to a $346,000 roster bonus on the fifth day of the 2016 league year, as well as a $100,000 workout bonus in 2016.
The Florida State product was expected to go in the first round, but most draft observers assumed he would land with a team that runs a 4-3 defense. Werner looked like a classic 4-3 defensive end who could defend the run and rush the passer, but the Colts drafted him with the No. 24 overall pick to play standing up at outside linebacker.
Werner will battle free-agent pickup Erik Walden in one of the NFL's more interesting position battles. Werner would seem to be a better base defense player, as Walden often has struggled against the run. Then again, there were occasional questions about Werner's motor in college, and he is transitioning to a new scheme.
