Johnny Manziel blames lateness at Manning camp on phone

HOOVER, Ala. -- For an offensive player, Johnny Manziel defended himself deftly on Wednesday while facing a barrage of questions about his offseason decision-making. The Texas A&M quarterback, first, said there is no truth to the notion that he was hung over the morning he awoke late and missed a meeting at the Manning Passing Academy last weekend.

"I overslept," Manziel said. "My phone went dead, no excuses. But I was absolutely not hung over."

Manziel indeed left the MPA on Saturday after missing a meeting. Although it was reported that he was asked to leave by Archie Manning, Manziel called it "a mutual decision."

The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner known as Johnny Football said his travel schedule leading up to his appearance as a camp counselor at the MPA was too hectic, and led to exhaustion.

"All I had been doing leading up to that, I probably bit off a little bit more than I could chew," he said.
