Pat McAfee reportedly stays a Colt under franchise tag

The Indianapolis Colts haven't had anyone play under the franchise tag since Edgerrin James in 2005. It appears that will change this season.

The Indianapolis Star reported Sunday that punter Pat McAfee will play under the one-year, $2.977 million franchise tag, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

According to The Star, it's unknown if the Colts explored getting a deal done before Monday's deadline for franchise players to sign long-term contracts.

McAfee averaged a career-high 47.9 yards per punt last season, including a personal best of 26 punts inside the 20-yard line. He also handled kickoff duties. Colts coach Chuck Pagano called his punter "a great weapon."

A great weapon who now has a better chance of hitting the open market in 2014.
