Cedric Benson, Green Bay Packers reportedly will meet

The Green Bay Packers are scheduled to meet with running back Cedric Benson on Wednesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Tuesday.

Benson was lost for the season Oct. 7 when he suffered a Lisfranc injury against the Indianapolis Colts. He signed with the Packers as a free agent before the 2012 season.

The Packers are in the market for a running back, again. They haven't had a 1,000-yard rusher since 2009, though coach Mike McCarthy says that's not a priority. The offense, however, gained momentum late in the 2012 season and won four of five games after rushing for at least 113 yards in those contests. The Packers failed to surpass 84 rushing yards in three of five regular-season losses.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Packers could use some more balance, and a consistent running back would make life easier.

Benson has remained unsigned this offseason, and the Packers would like to consider that option before the 2013 NFL Draft on Thursday. A healthy Benson in the fold could influence the decision on when and if the team takes a running back.
