Yes or no, NFL teams aren't getting any help from Jim Mastro, the Washington State assistant who helped former coach Chris Ault develop the pistol formation at Nevada.
Mastro has been asked by multiple teams for assistance on shutting down the zone-read, and he has declined every time. That's out of loyalty to former Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who now mans the controls for the San Francisco 49ers.
"As long as Colin is in the NFL, I'm not going to do that," Mastro told CBSSports.com last month. "He is like a son to me. There are plenty of people they (NFL teams) can get a hold of that can help them."
Mastro is out of the equation, but the Green Bay Packers have sent their assistants to Texas A&M for read-option tips. The New York Giants -- with division games against Robert Griffin III's Washington Redskins and Chip Kelly's likely option-heavy Philadelphia Eagles -- also have dipped into the college ranks for help. We'll find out soon enough if any of this extra work will pay off.
