Matt Flynn will compete to be Oakland Raiders' starter

Between Matt Flynn's relatively modest salary and the cost of a pair of late-round draft picks, it immediately was assumed that he would have to compete with Terrelle Pryor for the Oakland Raiders' starting quarterback job.

Instant Debate: Franchise Flynn?

General manager Reggie McKenzie confirmed as much while announcing the trade on Monday.

"I've known Matt Flynn since 2007 and scouted him before and after he entered the NFL," McKenzie said. "Matt is a tough football player and a talented quarterback. He will get the opportunity to compete to be a starter with the Raiders. I believe Matt has that potential, but I also know he hasn't had enough experience."

Flynn, due to his experience edge, likely will enter training camp as the favorite over Pryor.

Although Yahoo! Sports' Mike Silver recently reported "much organizational skepticism" about Pryor, the quarterback drew praise from head coach Dennis Allen for his creativity, athleticism and playmaking ability after the QB's Week 17 spot start.

The Raiders aren't going to be competitive in full-blown rebuilding mode. It makes sense to give the raw Pryor a shot to impress against Flynn this summer. The Raiders will want to know exactly what they have in both quarterbacks before going shopping again next offseason.
