E.J. Biggers, Washington Redskins reach contract

The Washington Redskins don't have an endless supply of money to throw at free agents, but the cap-strapped team has landed a potential starter on defense.

Free-agent cornerback E.J. Biggers signed with the Redskins on Wednesday, the team announced. Biggers, 25, gives coach Mike Shanahan a possible replacement for DeAngelo Hall, who was released by Washington earlier this month.

Biggers started 12 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season and will now compete for snaps with Richard Crawford, Josh Wilson, Jerome Murphy and Korey Lindsey in Washington. There's also a chance Hall returns to the fold at a reduced rate.

Biggers was graded as a top 20 cover man last season by ProFootballFocus, and served as a solid performer for an otherwise disastrous Bucs secondary that finished last in the league against the pass. The narrative in Washington was nearly as grim, with the Redskins finishing 29th in the same category. If nothing else, this is a solid depth hire for the Redskins.
