Report: Victor Butler being targeted by New York Jets

In preparing for Around the League's free agency primer on pass rushers, Victor Butler stood out as a young, talented prospect who would make for a smart, under-the-radar signing.

Playing behind DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer in Dallas, the 2009 fourth-round draft pick showed a propensity for harassing quarterbacks in his limited snaps over the past few years.

My suspicion was that former Cowboys coordinator Rob Ryan would target Butler as an edge rusher to ease the New Orleans Saints' transition to a 3-4 defense. As it turns out, Rob's twin brother, Rex, might beat him to the punch.

The New York Daily News reported Sunday that the Jets are targeting Butler to add a much-needed speed element to their glacially slow pass rush. As long as the Saints don't turn it into a bidding war, Butler should be a cost-effective upgrade on recently released veteran Calvin Pace.
