Geno Smith shows off speed at NFL Scouting Combine

INDIANAPOLIS -- West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith is known as a pocket passer. He isn't seen as a natural fit for use as a read-option quarterback because his college game really wasn't centered on running.

But Smith showed Sunday that he has the wheels to run when necessary.

Smith posted an official time of 4.59 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. Other notable quarterback times in the 40: Florida State's E.J. Manuel ran a 4.65, Tyler Wilson clocked a 4.95, Landry Jones ran a 5.11, and Ryan Nassib posted a 5.06.

For reference, the San Francisco 49ers' Colin Kaepernick and the Seattle Seahawks' Russell Wilson were in the 4.55 range during their combines.

Manuel is a player who could climb up draft boards because of his intelligence and athleticism. Smith's quick time is proof that he could break off some big running plays if called upon.
