Jim Harbaugh not calming down on 49ers' sideline

While his brother celebrated a Super Bowl title with 100,000 crab lovers, Jim Harbaugh spoke in a far less exciting setting at San Francisco 49ers headquarters on Tuesday.

Harbaugh looked and sounded like a tired man. He said the next step for the team will be some "R&R." This appears to be a very good idea.

Some takeaways from Harbaugh's 20-minute availability:

» Harbaugh acknowledged he wished the 49ers had a chance to make a different play-call on fourth-and-goal from the 5-yard line in the fourth quarter, but he didn't sound like a coach racked with regret. "The would've-could've-should've is undefeated. That's never failed."

» Harbaugh called the situation with Alex Smith unique and added he has a "great personal friendship" with the benched quarterback. But Harbaugh stopped short of saying Smith should be allowed to dictate his future. "I don't think any player has those wishes granted. They're under contract."

» Harbaugh dismissed talk that Randy Moss gave a poor effort on Colin Kaepernick's second-quarter interception on Sunday. "I felt the ball wasn't catchable. I think that's one Colin would like to have back."

» A reporter asked Harbaugh if he planned to tone down his sideline behavior after a highly animated showing on Sunday. "We fight to win. If you're asking me my personal etiquette needs to be changed? More catatonic on the sideline? I don't anticipate that happening."

» Harbaugh said signing safety Dashon Goldson to a new deal was a priority for the team. "I feel like you reward those type of people. Who do you reward if you don't reward those type of people?" Goldson said Tuesday he does not want to be hit with the franchise tag again in 2013.

» Defensive end Justin Smith will have surgery on his torn triceps this week. Harbaugh said his two to three month recovery timetable was a "guess." Smith didn't play well against the Baltimore Ravens, but Harbaugh wouldn't say the injury explained it.
