Aaron Kromer accepts OC role with Chicago Bears

Marc Trestman isn't wasting time gathering his crew in the Windy City.

Former New Orleans Saints interim head coach Aaron Kromer has accepted the role of offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported, citing a source informed of the coach's plans. Kromer also likely will serve as the offensive line coach.

ESPN first reported the news Wednesday morning, and the Bears officially announced the hire Wednesday night, confirming Kromer also will be the O-line coach.

Kromer and Trestman crossed paths on an Oakland Raiders team that went to the Super Bowl in 2002. Trestman worked wonders with quarterback Rich Gannon in Oakland, and he has been hired by the Bears to do the same with Jay Cutler. We still expect this offense to bear Trestman's fingerprints.

Kromer likely will hold the coordinator title, with Trestman calling plays, not unlike in Dallas, where Cowboys coach Jason Garrett calls the shots despite Bill Callahan sitting in the OC position.

Trestman is an intriguing hire because of the promise he brings to a troubled Bears offense. It will be fascinating to see what he does with Chicago's scheme. Kromer, meanwhile, equates to a rock-solid hire for the Bears' eternally shaky line.

Somewhere right now, Cutler is smiling.
