Chicago Bears exec: Jay Cutler similar to George Halas

The Chicago Bears never have finished above 23rd in total offense in Jay Cutler's four years at Soldier Field. Despite that fact, Cutler continues to lead a supiciously consequence-free existence. Call him Teflon Jay.

Need evidence? How about this glowing endorsement by Bears chairman George McCaskey on Monday:

"I think he's an outstanding leader. He reminds me a lot of George Halas, as a player," McCaskey said, via the Chicago Sun-Times. "Outstanding competitor, toughness, and will do anything to win.

Jay Cutler. Papa Bear. Hmmmmmmm.

"Jay Cutler is the most talented quarterback the Bears have here in the last 60 years," McCaskey added. "He's a very good quarterback. He wants to be great, and he needs to be great, and we need to do what we can to achieve that."

Bears general manager Phil Emery said Lovie Smith's replacement at head coach will have input on the quarterback position. That said, don't expect Cutler to leave town any time soon.

"I see Jay as a franchise quarterback," Emery said. "We have to build around him."

We don't disagree Cutler is the best quarterback the Bears have had in decades, but that's not saying much, either. If Chicago is going to take the next step, Cutler needs to improve, along with the offense.
