Ron Wolf hired as San Diego Chargers consultant

The San Diego Chargers have hired Ron Wolf as a consultant to help lead their search for a new general manager.

GM A.J. Smith and coach Norv Turner were fired Monday.

The Chargers' search will be run by a four-man committee: President/chairman Dean Spanos, director of college scouting John Spanos, assistant GM Ed McGuire and Wolf. The GM then will join in the process of searching for the next coach.

Dean Spanos told NFL.com that he first talked to Wolf "eight or nine days ago" after being put in touch by a mutual friend, and that after speaking a few times, they agreed to move forward. Wolf's first day with the Chargers will be Tuesday, and Spanos said he sees the former Green Bay Packers GM as "a very, very credible person who's well-respected in the league."
