With rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III back in the fold, the Redskins fought off the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday for a 27-20 victory and remain one win away from capturing the NFC East title.
Washington's down-to-the-wire win resembled previous victories. Griffin delivered another smart, largely mistake-free effort. Rookie running back Alfred Morris pounded the ball for 91 yards on 22 carries. The Redskins' defense -- no juggernaut, mind you -- did just enough to keep Eagles rookie passer Nick Foles from tying the score on the final drive.
"It takes a lot of character from your football team to do what we've done," Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said of a Redskins team that was once 3-6 (and forked by this website).
Griffin was unhindered by the knee injury that pulled him out of the lineup in Week 15. His accuracy for a rookie is remarkable. RG3 suffered just his fifth interception on the season, but it came off a tipped pass. The rest of Griffin's day -- 16-of-24 passing for 198 yards and two touchdowns -- was another chapter in an outstanding rookie campaign.
A Minnesota Vikings victory over the Houston Texans on Sunday prevented the Redskins (9-6) from sealing an NFC playoff berth, but they have mowed down four consecutive NFC East opponents. If they can take care of their fifth -- the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17 -- the Redskins will win their first division crown since 1999.
