Dowell Loggains on trial run for Tennessee Titans

Dowell Loggains is getting his shot.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said Tuesday on "NFL Total Access" that the Tennessee Titans have given Loggains what amounts to a trial run as the team's offensive coordinator.

Mike Munchak fired Chris Palmer on Monday and promoted Loggains from quarterbacks coach, a move that has the fingerprints of Titans owner Bud Adams. Munchak might not be with the Titans next season, but Loggains -- well-liked in the building -- could gain some traction for a long-term role if the offense comes to life down the stretch.

Rapoport said the Titans entered the season under the impression they had more talent at the skill positions than at any point since the franchise relocated to Tennessee in 1997.

The offense's inability Sunday to expose the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars sealed Palmer's fate and provided Loggains with what amounts to a five-game audition. Rapoport said Loggains has experience in a larger role: He took on added responsibility when former coordinator Mike Heimerdinger battled cancer in 2010.

Of course, if the Titans part with Munchak in the offseason and land a big fish at head coach, that person might want to bring in his own guys. The future is murky in Tennessee, whether Loggains succeeds or not.
