Willis McGahee on Denver Broncos' injured reserve list

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox said earlier this week he didn't plan on placing running back Willis McGahee on injured reserve. Something changed in the meantime.

Fox Sports insider and NFL Network contributor Jay Glazer says the Broncos placed Willis McGahee on injured reserve.

McGahee tore his right medial collateral ligament and suffered a broken leg in the second quarter of the Broncos' 30-23 win over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. The Broncos will have to rely on rookie Ronnie Hillman, Lance Ball, and former first-round pick Knowshon Moreno for the rest of the season. Denver indicated an unwillingness to sign another running back this week, but this news could change the team's mindset.

Hillman had roughly 60 percent of the snaps last week when McGahee was hurt, with Ball getting the rest. Moreno was inactive for the game, but will be active moving forward, Broncos executive John Elway confirmed Wednesday.

It's a rough blow for McGahee, who has remade his career in Denver. He's due $2.5 million on his contract next season.

UPDATE: Lindsay Jones of USA Today reports that the Broncos plan to designate McGahee for return, meaning he'd be eligible to practice in six weeks and play in eight.
