Their 29-26 overtime victory over the New York Jets on Sunday stirred a level of uncertainty this fan base isn't accustomed to. The Patriots have surrendered three double-digit leads during their 4-3 start, something else that's new for this team.

Here in the newsroom, the question grew louder as Rex Ryan's Jets crept back into a contest they weren't expected to win: Why can't the Patriots close?

Quarterback Tom Brady was asked as much on WEEI-AM's "Dennis & Callahan" on Monday.

"Well, we're trying to do it," he said, via the Boston Herald. "I don't think you just flip a switch. I wish it were that easy, and maybe there were times when it did look that easy.

"Maybe we just spoiled some people in the meantime because it's hard to win, man. It's hard to win."

The subtext is that the Patriots -- at 4-3 -- somehow are a disappointment, but the reality is coach Bill Belichick still is experimenting, still is testing the boundaries of his offense and working with combinations of players on defense.

The Patriots' three losses have come by a combined four points, which stings -- but fingers off the panic button, people.

New England is just getting warmed up.
