Kansas City Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli was offered a two-year contract extension by owner Clark Hunt earlier this year, CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora reported Sunday.

Chiefs fans will not be thrilled to learn the news. Their team is 22-32 since Pioli took over in 2009.
Pioli has drawn ire from a fan base that was excited when the Chiefs signed him from the New England Patriots, but he has failed to return the tradition-rich Kansas City franchise to relevance. His signing of quarterback Matt Cassel hasn't worked out. Pioli also has been criticized for reportedly having an overbearing management style.
Hunt and Pioli both declined comment to La Canfora. It's hard to imagine Pioli wouldn't accept the deal if it remains on the table, although La Canfora reported that buyout language has been a sticking point.
UPDATE: Maybe there won't be a deal after all. The Kansas City Star, citing a source close to the situation, reported that the Chiefs haven't offered Pioli a contract extension. Also, Hunt told The Star: "We don't discuss people's contracts publicly."
