The New York Jets aren't giving up on cornerback Darrelle Revis.
NFL.com and NFL Network's Albert Breer reported Sunday the Jets will wait until after Revis undergoes surgery to repair his torn anterior cruciate ligament before deciding whether or not to place him on injured reserve.
Jets coach Rex Ryan talked Friday about keeping Revis on the active roster with hopes he might be ready to play in the Super Bowl in February. More bluster from Ryan on the surface, but Breer noted the historical precedent for New York's wishful thinking.
Way back in 1995, Rod Woodson became the first player in NFL history to return from reconstructive knee surgery in the same season. The Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back tore his ACL in Week 1, but he returned in time for his team's Super Bowl loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Woodson's recovery took 19 weeks on the nose. As Breer points out, that's the exact time span between when Revis was hurt and the date of Super Bowl XLVII.
How the Jets make it to the title game minus Revis is another conversation altogether.
