Andy Reid: Michael Vick is Eagles' starting quarterback

Andy Reid's Michael Vick endorsement wasn't exactly a ringing one. The Philadelphia Eagles coach said Monday: "Right now we're with Michael. We'll evaluate it as we go."

Reid further explained his thoughts that evening during his radio show on 94WIP in Philadelphia, via ESPN.

"It was the last question. I was finishing up the press conference," Reid said. "Michael's our quarterback. Period. Michael's our quarterback.

"Listen, does he need to get better? Do we all need to get better? Yes. We're all going to do that."

Some wondered if there could be a change at quarterback in Philadelphia, especially after the Eagles lost 27-6 to the Arizona Cardinals. Vick completed 17 of 37 passes for 217 yards without a touchdown or an interception. He was sacked five times, fumbled twice and had a 64.8 passer rating.

Vick currently ranks No. 29 in the NFL with a 66.2 passer rating. His six interceptions are tied for the league high.

A portion of the Eagles fan base has become enamored with backup quarterback Nick Foles. He completed 63.5 percent of his passes during the preseason. He also threw for six touchdowns, was picked off twice and finished with a 110.1 passer rating.

Part of the problem is that Vick continues to get manhandled. He was hit 13 times against the Cardinals, not including his four rushing attempts.

"Yeah, I am (surprised he can take all the hits) because he's not that big of a guy, but he's a tough one," New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck told The Star-Ledger. "He keeps getting up and making plays, so hopefully we can have the success other teams have had against him as far as getting him on the ground."

In the end, Vick isn't going anywhere. There's some risk/reward with his style of play, but the Eagles have Super Bowl aspirations and Foles is a rookie. Vick under center gives them the best chance of realizing those goals. The Eagles need to address their protection issues regardless of who's under center.
