In the 1995 Smashing Pumpkins' classic "Tonight, Tonight," Billy Corgan sings, "The impossible is possible tonight."
We thought of that lyric Thursday when the New York Jets scored their first touchdown of the preseason. It came against the Philadelphia Eagles, on a 6-yard strike from Greg McElroy to running back Terrance Ganaway.
In other words, this was a long time coming. Hell, it was a moment to rejoice, evidenced by the polite applause that broke out in the NFL.com newsroom.
Apologies to those of you wondering if offensive coordinator Tony Sparano gave an enhanced version of his infamous field-goal fist pump. We were watching the local Philadelphia telecast, which didn't prioritize the coverage of that sort of thing.
The first touchdown of August also turned out to be the last. The Jets lost 28-10, finishing 0-4 in the preseason for the first time since 1993. That team went 8-8.
