The Miami Dolphins tried to make things work with former first-round draft pick Vontae Davis, but the team ultimately decided it was better off having the cornerback play somewhere else.
Miami had its reasons, but it leaves the team with some legitimate depth issues. Without Davis, the Dolphins are forced to move the erratic Nolan Carroll up the depth chart. The Dolphins have no experienced player to work as the fourth corner.
Coach Joe Philbin told players during a meeting two weeks ago (captured by the HBO "Hard Knocks" crew) that criticism of personnel moves were not to be discussed out of house. Dolphins players followed those instructions on Monday -- kind of.
"It's tough, obviously," Reggie Bush said, via The Miami Herald, when asked if the trade was discouraging. "It's tough."
The Herald reported that a Dolphins publicist quickly ordered the interview to end after Bush's comment.
Karlos Dansby, whose comments about the release of Chad Johnson prompted Philbin's talk with players, was not corralled by a team employee in time.
"I'll leave that up to you all," Dansby said on if the trade was discouraging. "I don't know what the situation was or what occurred to cause the trade.
"He's a great player, one of the best corners in the game. I'm not sure about the direction of the team. That's not my place. My place is to play hard and be the leader of men."
Something tells us the matter of Vontae Davis was not up for debate at the most recent gathering of "The Leadership Council."
