Vernon Gholston returns to NFL, signs deal with Rams

Vernon Gholston has risen once more.

The 26-year-old linebacker, on the short list of greatest draft busts of the past decade, has signed with the St. Louis Rams, the team announced.

Breer: New offense, new hope

Can Sam Bradford bounce back in 2012? Albert Breer says the Rams QB is taking to Brian Schottenheimer's offense. **More ...**

Gholston was selected with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, but he failed to record so much as a single sack in his three seasons with the New York Jets. Gholston made $21 million off the Jets before Rex Ryan gave up on him with two years remaining on his contract.

Gholston caught on with the Chicago Bears last summer, although he didn't survive the final cutdown in training camp.

The Rams signed Gholston despite also working out former Patriots defensive end Andre Carter, who had 10 sacks last season before tearing his quad in Week 15. According to the Boston Herald, Carter remains limited and is "not close to being ready to play."

Well, that explains it.
