Chicago Bears defensive tackle Nate Collins was suspended for the season's first game without pay for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy, the team said Thursday.

Collins, who signed a one-year contract with the Bears in May, also will surrender an extra game check, the NFL ruled.

Per NFL rules, the reason for the violation was not disclosed.

Collins, however, was charged with marijuana possession in February after being arrested during a traffic stop in Virginia.

The Bears open the season against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 9 at Soldier Field in Chicago, and Collins will be eligible to return to the team the following day.

Collins, 24, appeared in 13 games over the past two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has recorded 10 tackles and a half-sack.
