Chandler Harnish, Mr. Irrelevant, to be celebrated

One day, we'll perhaps know Chandler Harnish as a football player, the gritty backup quarterback who Andrew Luck will seek out for counsel in times of strife.

Darlington: College pride
NFL rookies would have loved to participate in a college football playoff. Jeff Darlington relays some major trash talk. More ...

But for now, he's still best known for being the last pick (No. 253, Indianapolis Colts) in the 2012 NFL Draft, a reality that makes him "Mr. Irrelevant."

He'll be the guest of honor this week at Newport Beach, Calif., for Mr. Irrelevant Week, which exists, we swear. Harnish has been a good sport about the whole thing.

"The name 'Mr. Irrelevant' kind of puts a negative spin on it at times," Harnish told The Journal Gazette, "but for me, it's going to be a great experience. … There are not many opportunities in your lifetime you get to experience something like this."

And to answer the question we know you're thinking: Mrs. Irrelevant is persona non grata in the Newport Beach area this week. It was fairly evident at the draft that the Mr. Irrelevant people were not fond of Mrs. Irrelevant. Is that relevant? Irrelevant.
