Anthony Gonzalez released by New England Patriots

Anthony Gonzalez's stint in New England didn't even last three months.

The Patriots released Gonzalez on Tuesday and also signed three players: offensive lineman Jamey Richard, rookie free-agent tight end Nick Melillo and cornerback Alfonzo Dennard, a seventh-round draft pick.

Some might point to this release and say the Patriots did Gonzalez a favor. He was going to be caught in a numbers game in a ridiculously deepPatriots receiving corps and was unlikely to make the team out of training camp.

We'll take the cynical angle: Gonzalez could have some serious physical issues if the Patriots already know he can't beat out guys like Donte' Stallworth, Jabar Gaffney and other veterans. Gonzalez has just five catches in the past three seasons after a strong start to his career in 2007 and 2008.

A first-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in '07, Gonzalez has faced non-stop injuries throughout his career. He was absent from organized team activities last week. Something tells us there is a little more to this story that we don't know.
