Knowshon Moreno fighting for spot with Broncos

Knowshon Moreno is working his way back from the torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered in 2011, but where he'll play in 2012 remains in question.

The Broncos running back is "fighting for a roster spot," according to Lindsay Jones of The Denver Post. Appearing Friday on ESPN, Jones reported that Moreno was a participant at the team's organized team activities and struggling to stand out in a crowded backfield.

We've mentioned more than once this offseason that Moreno could be the odd man out in Denver. Willis McGahee remains the starter and Lance Ball was productive last season.

Moreno’s role could be reduced to passing situations, but John Elway was thrilled about the addition of rookie Ronnie Hillman. The former San Diego State back is valued for his pass-catching ability and his blazing speed.

Historically, running backs rebounding from an ACL tear tend to decline. It certainly doesn't help that Moreno was nabbed for a DUI in February.

This isn't what the team was hoping for when Moreno was taken with the 12th overall pick in 2009. Following a promising rookie campaign (947 rushing yards, nine total touchdowns), Moreno has missed 12 games in two seasons. We wouldn't be surprised if he's played his last down in Denver.
