The New York Giants and head coach Tom Coughlin are expected to hammer out a contract extension "sooner rather than later," team president and co-owner John Mara told the New York Daily News as the franchise received its Super Bowl rings Wednesday.

Mara confirmed to the newspaper the sides are working on the extension, which Mara had previously predicted would be completed by at least mid-May.

Coughlin, 65, has led the Giants to Super Bowl wins in 2011 and 2007 despite inconsistent play. The team nearly missed the playoffs last season after enduring a four-game mid-season losing streak. In 2010, the team squandered a big lead to the Philadelphia Eagles, which cost it a playoff spot.

Coughlin has led the Giants since 2004 and had previously been the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars (from 1995 to 2002).

Coughlin has a career regular-season record of 142-114 and a playoff record of 12-7.
