It's been a busy offseason for Donovan McNabb:
• First, he went public with a dire prediction for Robert Griffin III, claiming the Redskins rookie quarterback would crumble to pieces in Washington under the leadership of Shanahan & Son.
• Second, he publicly shredded Tim Tebow, coming across as a wildly cranky, mildly bored gossip.
• Third, after boldly categorizing himself as a Hall of Fame passer, McNabb sat and waited for the phone to ring. Total silence -- but he's not giving up.
"I've been training hard and preparing myself out in San Diego working with George Whitfield, the obviously well-known quarterback guru, supposedly, for over the past month," McNabb told ESPN Chicago on Friday, per ProFootballTalk.com. "Just kind of refining the skills, working on the mechanics and getting back to a high level, an elite level. I'm just waiting for the opportunity to display that."
McNabb continued: "I sort of have some unfinished business. I love the game. I have a passion for the game, and I look forward to continuing that on. ... I will be playing somewhere. This is the first time I'm actually going through free agency and I'm excited about it because I get the choice to pick and choose (from) the teams that are interested."
Plenty of teams would have jumped at the chance to add McNabb earlier in his career. After all, he is a six-time Pro Bowl quarterback who faced his detractors with poise during 11 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.Â
The fall has been rapid -- and steep -- but there's an ounce of hope: Teams gamble on passers long after they've played their best football.
Sit by the phone, Mr. McNabb -- but bring a book.
