Scout: Top five QBs in draft rival any chosen last year

Five quarterbacks were taken in the top 36 overall picks of last year's draft. No one expects that many quarterbacks to go that early this April, but there is an argument to be made that this year's crop is actually deeper.

One scout thinks it is incredibly deep.

"I think there's five of them that are better than any of them last year," one scout told Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Um, wow. That scout is saying that Kirk Cousins and Brandon Weeden (the fourth- and fifth-best quarterback prospects this year) are better than Cam Newton. There were disagreements about Newton at this time a year ago, but the No. 1 overall pick went on to have one of the best rookie seasons for a quarterback in NFL history.

Scouts are encouraged to hold strong beliefs, so we almost admire this unnamed one sticking to his guns. Even if he's totally crazy.

If nothing else, the quote is a reminder that guys like Weeden and Cousins might go a lot higher in the draft than people expect. Just like Jake Locker, Christian Ponder and Blaine Gabbert did a year ago.
