Battle, who has spent his four-year career with the AFC West rival Kansas City Chiefs, made five starts last season and rushed for 597 yards and two touchdowns.
The Chargers are in the market for a veteran backup to Ryan Mathews after Mike Tolbert signed a four-year deal with the Carolina Panthers. Battle played well at times last season as part of a rotation in Kansas City.
U-T San Diego also reported that the Chargers have formally offered contracts to a trio of their own free agents -- running back Jacob Hester, nose tackle Antonio Garay and defensive end Luis Castillo.
The newspaper noted that there is no timetable for a response from the players.
