The Miami Dolphins were scheduled to talk with Mike McCoy about their vacant head-coaching position Monday morning, according to a league source, and the team later confirmed that they had completed their interview with the Denver Broncos' offensive coordinator.
McCoy has gained traction as a possible head coach after his innovative work with Tim Tebow this season, converting the Broncos' offense into a scheme that emphasized the quarterback's strength via a zone-read attack and reached the divisional playoff round.
League sources also said Sunday that the Dolphins could ask Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer to come back for a second interview after he had a strong first meeting.
The Dolphins hoped to land Jeff Fisher, but he agreed Friday to become coach of the St. Louis Rams. Miami also has interviewed interim coach Todd Bowles, Chicago Bears special teams coach Dave Toub and Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin for the job.
The Dolphins fired Tony Sparano last month with three games to go in his fourth season as coach, and they finished 6-10 to miss the playoffs for the ninth time in 10 years.
