Foot injury ends Schaub's season; Texans to sign QB Clemens

The Houston Texans have placed quarterback Matt Schaub on injured reserve and will sign former Jets backup Kellen Clemens, according to a league source.

Schaub injured his foot during the Texans' 37-9 victory over Tampa Bay on Nov. 13 before the team's bye week. The initial diagnosis showed he suffered a significant injury, but the team was seeking a second opinion to see if it would be possible for Schaub to return this season.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak confirmed the signing of Clemens and told reporters that Schaub will have surgery next week.

"Disappointing," Kubiak said. "I hurt for (Matt)."

Schaub said the injury occurred when his foot was caught underneath Buccaneers defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth on a quarterback sneak, and acknowledged last week "it doesn't look good." Kubiak said Wednesday that doctors told Schaub no amount of rest would give Schaub an opportunity to play this season.

Matt Leinart will replace Schaub as the starter Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Clemens started nine games with the Jets in five seasons, in which he was active for 25 games. He has a career 51.8 percent completion percentage with five touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

"He knows our terminology," Kubiak said of Clemens, who will start as the No. 3 quarterback. "I liked his workout ... I think he can catch up quicker than anyone else we worked out."

In addition to working out Clemens, the Texans had auditioned veteran quarterbacks Jeff Garcia, Trent Edwards, Brodie Croyle and Chase Clement on Monday, according to the team's website.
