Hester, dealing with a left ankle injury, missed another day of practice on Friday and was listed as questionable to face the Lions. Hester has been hobbled with the injury since the fourth quarter of Monday night's 30-24 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
"There's only one Devin Hester," coach Lovie Smith said. "No one has anyone like him. Without him there, we'll just have another very good returner to replace him. We have other guys on our roster who have scored touchdowns in an NFL game, so we should be OK."
Johnny Knox would replace Hester on kick returns and Earl Bennett is his backup at receiver.
The news is more encouraging for defensive end Julius Peppers, who returned to practice Friday for the first time this week and is listed as probable. Peppers injured his left knee against the Eagles but was able to return to the game.
Safety Major Wright (ankle) was also listed as probable. Smith added that rookie right tackle Gabe Carimi underwent arthroscopic surgery on his injured right knee. Smith said Carimi would not go on IR at this time.
