After battling the lingering effects of the plantar fascia injury he suffered last season, Gates practiced for the first time in almost a month on Monday. He missed Thursday's practice after participating Wednesday, and took part in full practice on Friday. Officially, the Chargers listed Gates as questionable.
"Going three days in a row might have been more than we needed right now," Turner said.
According to the station, Gates is unlikely to play the entire game Sunday.
"I think it would be hard to ask him to do that," Turner said. "We did that in the first two games, and that probably got us where we're at, so we just have to be smarter. See how he handles it. Play him a couple of series and then give him a series out. Obviously, we've been playing without him. I'm sure we can manage that."
The nine-year veteran played through the nagging injury during the Chargers' first two games this season, hauling in eight catches for 74 yards.
